At the Vimeo awards last week there was a noticeable trend: All the winners (and most of the presenters) were men. In the 13 categories, many of which were won by duos or groups, there was only one woman winner.
So I did a quick rough count and found that of the 80 or so individuals listed as directors or creators of the finalist films, fewer than 10 were women. I stopped my count there, but I imagine if you did a similar cursory review of the shortlisted films, the trend would continue.
This is not meant to be a dig at Vimeo or any of the very talented male filmmakers who won or were shortlisted, but it did make me wonder, where my girls at?
There is no question that the filmmaking and photojournalism worlds have been traditionally man-centric. But in our ever-growing list of great visual storytelling, many of the projects are produced by women.
Here are just a few of the woman-produced projects that have recently been high on our gender-neutral list of stuff we love.
